Your newborn has been awake for 45 minutes and is starting to fuss.
You check one wake-window chart. It says 30 to 60 minutes.
Another says 45 to 90.
A third gives you a different number again.
So which one are you supposed to follow?
Here’s the part that often gets lost when newborn wake windows are reduced to charts:
Wake windows are reference ranges, not timers.
There isn’t a medically prescribed minute when your newborn needs to fall asleep. And the fact that different charts give different numbers doesn’t necessarily mean one is right and the others are wrong.
They’re describing commonly observed patterns, not biological deadlines.
So we’ll give you the ranges you’re looking for. But more importantly, we’ll show you how to use them without spending the newborn months watching the clock.
What Is a Newborn Wake Window?
A wake window is simply the amount of time your baby is awake between one sleep period and the next.
It starts when your baby wakes and ends when they fall asleep again.
That means a wake window isn’t just playtime.
Feeding counts.
Diaper changes count.
Tummy time counts.
Cuddling counts.
The time you spend rocking or settling your baby back to sleep also happens within that awake period.
This matters because newborn wake periods can be short. In the earliest weeks, feeding and basic care may take up most of the time your baby is awake.
Newborn Wake Window Chart by Age
If you search for a newborn wake window chart, you’ll find different numbers depending on where you look.
The ranges below reflect commonly published observational guidance. They’re useful for understanding the general progression during the first 12 weeks, but they aren’t clinical targets your baby has to meet.

These ranges overlap because babies don’t suddenly graduate from one wake window to another on a particular birthday.
A 7-week-old might sometimes become tired after 45 minutes and comfortably stay awake longer at another point in the day.
The chart gives you context. Your baby gives you information.
Why We Don’t Give You a Minute-by-Minute Wake Window
Different newborn wake-window charts give different numbers.
That’s worth paying attention to.
If wake windows were precise medical thresholds, you’d expect authoritative guidance to identify a specific amount of time a newborn should remain awake.
That isn’t how the guidance works.
The American Academy of Pediatrics does not prescribe a minute-by-minute wake-window chart for newborns. Broader sleep recommendations focus on sleep needs and safe sleep rather than requiring babies to follow exact awake intervals.
The National Sleep Foundation’s sleep-duration recommendations, for example, put newborn sleep needs at roughly 14 to 17 hours across a 24-hour period. That tells us something useful about overall sleep. It doesn’t tell us that every 6-week-old needs to fall asleep exactly 60 minutes after waking.
Newborn sleep is still developing during these early months. Circadian organization gradually becomes more established rather than arriving fully formed at birth.
That’s why a reference range can be helpful without becoming a rule.
Should You Follow Wake Windows or Sleepy Cues?
Use wake windows to give yourself a rough sense of when your baby might become tired.
Then watch your baby.
Common sleepy behaviours can include:
- yawning
- staring or becoming less engaged
- rubbing their eyes
- becoming quieter
- increasing fussiness
These behaviours aren’t a perfect diagnostic system either.
A hungry baby can fuss.
An overstimulated baby can look away.
A baby who needs a diaper change may suddenly become unsettled.
Instead of asking whether the clock or the cue is correct, use both pieces of information together.
If your baby has been awake for roughly as long as they usually tolerate and they’re beginning to show tired behaviour, sleep may be what they need.

What If My Newborn Stays Awake Longer Than the Chart?
This is where wake-window advice can become unnecessarily stressful.
You may see claims online suggesting that once a baby passes their ideal wake window, cortisol suddenly spikes and sleep becomes dramatically harder.
The biology isn’t that precise.
Stress and arousal are real physiological processes, and a tired baby can become increasingly unsettled and difficult to soothe. But there isn’t evidence for a universal minute on a wake-window chart after which every newborn suddenly experiences a hormonal event.
If the chart says 60 minutes and your baby is still content at 70 minutes, you haven’t broken anything.
Watch what happens next.
Maybe they become tired soon afterward.
Maybe that particular wake period is longer than usual.
Maybe tomorrow looks completely different.
A reference range tells you what’s common. It doesn’t determine what has to happen next.
What If My Newborn Gets Tired Earlier?
The other side of wake-window anxiety gets discussed much less.
Suppose your 6-week-old has been awake for 35 minutes and is already becoming sleepy.
You find a chart suggesting 45 to 90 minutes.
Should you try to keep them awake until 45 minutes?
No.
The lower end of a wake-window range isn’t a minimum your baby needs to achieve.
You don’t earn anything by keeping a sleepy newborn awake simply to complete the “correct” wake window.
Let the chart provide context. If your baby’s behaviour consistently tells you something different, pay attention to the baby in front of you.
Do Wake Windows Change During the Day?
They can.
Your newborn’s awake periods don’t have to be identical from morning to evening.
You might eventually notice that your baby tends to have shorter awake periods at one point in the day and longer ones at another. You may also notice that a pattern appears for several days and then changes.
That variability is part of why looking at patterns across time can be more useful than judging one wake period in isolation.

Wake Windows Are Not a Newborn Schedule
A wake window describes duration.
A schedule assigns a clock time.
Those aren’t the same thing.
A schedule might say:
7:00 AM: Wake
8:00 AM: Nap
10:00 AM: Feed
A wake-window approach simply notices how long your baby has been awake and considers that information alongside what your baby is doing.
That changes the internal conversation from:
“My baby has been awake for 61 minutes. They need to sleep now.”
to:
“We’re around the time they often start getting tired. I’ll watch what they’re showing me.”
That distinction matters during the newborn stage because sleep, feeding and alert periods can still move considerably from one day to another.
Around 3 Months Old: Shifting Rhythms
As babies approach 3 months, their sleep and wake patterns may begin showing more organization.
Awake periods often become longer. Babies become more interested in their surroundings. Some families begin noticing more recognizable differences between daytime and nighttime sleep.
It’s also where published wake-window ranges begin widening considerably.

How long should a newborn be awake?
Newborn wake periods are generally short and tend to lengthen across the first three months. Commonly published ranges start around 30 to 60 minutes in the earliest weeks and gradually extend toward roughly 60 to 120 minutes by 8 to 12 weeks. These are observational reference ranges rather than medical requirements.
Do wake windows include feeding?
Yes. A wake window begins when your baby wakes and ends when they fall asleep again. Feeding, diaper changes, cuddling, tummy time and settling all happen within that awake period.
What happens if a newborn stays awake too long?
A tired newborn may become fussier or harder to settle. But passing a published wake-window range by a few minutes doesn’t mean you’ve harmed your baby or automatically triggered a cortisol spike. Look at your baby’s behaviour and the broader pattern rather than treating the chart as a deadline.
Should I wake my newborn from a nap?
Don’t wake a newborn simply because a wake-window chart says it’s time to be awake.
Feeding is different. Some newborns need to be woken for feeds, particularly in the early weeks or when there are concerns about feeding, jaundice, weight gain, prematurity or another medical issue. Follow the feeding guidance given by your baby’s healthcare professional.
Wake windows shouldn’t override that guidance.
Seeing Your Newborn’s Own Rhythm
At the end of a long newborn day, it’s easy to think:
They barely slept today.
Or:
They were awake forever this evening.
But exhaustion is not good at keeping records.

It can tell you what other babies commonly do.
It can’t tell you what your baby did.
